2026 Japan Fair Haiku Contest Submission

[ ]

As promised… here are my submissions for Japan Fair's 2026 Haiku contest.

I'm going to skip the usual explanatory preamble and get right to the poems.

Submission 1: Old Couch

worn couch spring cradle
I.V. drip fed the cool breeze~
trapped in summer nap

Submission 2: Choo

cottonwood clogged nose
sneeze erupts! painting flowers
the true spring palette

So once again, I did not place or get any kind of honorable mention (⸝⸝⸝-﹏-⸝⸝⸝)

Oh well! This year, the haiku contest overlapped with another creative writing project, so I was short on time (also I procrastinated.)

I think I drafted all of my ideas (including a few rejects) in the two days before the contest submissions were due. I offer this not as an excuse, just to document what the experience was like.

I was honestly expecting to come back to these submissions a month later and hate them, but I still like them quite a bit! They're a little bland, but there's some fun word choice and I think they fit the spirit of the contest well.

Watch out, 2027! Next year's entries will be even better.

You can read the winners for this year's contest here.

My favorite this year was a youth honorable mention!

moving day
a toy soldier left to guard
the tree house
- Florin Maica (15)

Congrats to Florin and all the winners!
